New Photo of Calypso aka Callie

Calypso ~ aka Callie was covered in ticks and malnourished, in fact emaciated. She was dumped and barely surviving with her pups in a junk yard with 30-40 feral dogs. She is so very sweet and gentle. She has had a very rough life and seems so grateful and appreciative of any kindness and comfort she gets. She is heart worm positive and will be treated asap. I need to build her up and let her gain some weight first. When I got her she didn't know how to walk on a leash and was very insecure coming inside and walking on floors. Clearly had not done that before.

Calypso now loves coming in the house and enjoys the comfort of her crate with a fluffy quilt to lay on. She takes treats very gently and wants to please. She lays on a dog bed and acts like she is afraid to do anything that might get her in trouble, but is getting more relaxed every day and now just looks at the other dogs showing no sign of aggression to them. I think she has great potential to be rehabbed into a wonderful companion. You can see the joy in her in just having a safe comfortable place to lie down.

Callie is spayed, current on shots and micro chipped. It will be a while before she is well enough to be adopted, as needs that HW treatment. That will give time to build up her confidence and get her use to living the good life.

This is a big thing, this is an expensive series of treatments. Can you help, of course you can! Any amount will help. Please send your donation in check or money order form (no cash please) to:

Dripping Springs, TX 78620

We Hear From Our Adopters!

It’s been a few months, but I wanted to give you an update on our boy Axel (formally Amigo Duke). As you can see, he’s very handsome. Had him to the vet just this morning for vaccinations and physical and he weighed in at 84 pounds! Vet wants to see him down to 80 so we’re going on a diet. He really has turned into a sweet sweet dog. Extremely affectionate. When Dan leaves, he gets so stressed! We’ve been taking him in my car to an urban-retail-condo-apartment development type place in Plano on weekends for walks. His socialization has really improved. He has no problem with people but gets a little excited when other dogs are around. We have two female GSDs in the neighborhood who run in the park right behind my house. When Coco and Saga are out back, we take Axel back there, they run and play like crazy. We are really enjoying this guy and feel so fortunate to have him. He bonded so quickly.

Sugar's Story

Sugar entered my life when she was 2 years old. My favorite rescue directer/founder called me up and asked if I could foster this white female GSD mix out of TLAC. We didn't know her story, just that she needed help getting out of TLAC. "Sure", I said and made arrangements to pick her up.

Sugar was first adopted to a woman who's husband (they met on the internet) was a policeman. He'd wanted a canine company for a long time. The wife finally relented (reluctantly I found out). The wife then completely changed her mind, after the husband had totally fallen in love with Sugar. She claimed Sugar urinated on her brand new carpet, in her brand new house, chased her cat relentlessly, and then growled at her unemployed, discontented, adult son (I know, I know, I'm bitter). The rescue group and I took her back.

Her second adoption was a total flop. I let a friend adopt Sugar, only their personalities clashed completely. If Sugar could misbehave, she did so at every opportunity. The rescue and I took Sugar back.

Her third adoption seemed to be a match made in heaven. She had a canine companion as well as a young, energetic human couple. Two years after her adoption and the purchase of a house, this couple banned Sugar and her companion to the back yard. Sugar learned to bark. She barked all day and all night. The rescue and I took her back. We were angry at this couple. So angry we put them on a local "do not adopt to" list.

This foster (me) couldn't bear to send Sugar away anymore. So my new boyfriend (who fell in love with her) and I adopted her. She's NEVER misbehaved for me ever! She gets along very well with my whole pack. Sugar is the best!

It's been two years since I adopted Sugar, and she's almost 9 years old now. She loves her walks, loves to “wooooowoooo”. She's been called “snow-dog” by neighborhood children, “Lipazzaner snow-dog” by me because she loves to spin around on her hind quarters, and she struts lighter than air when she walks. My boyfriend calls her “curly-tail snow-dog”. She doesn't like thunderstorms much, but just pants & paces when they are happening, no biggie!

Panzer Needs A Home Too!

Panzer was returned to our group after an adoption that didn't work out. He is over a year old now. He is a beautiful boy, but something happened in his adopted home and he now doesn’t trust anyone but me, his foster mom. He will need a lot of work to learn to accept someone new again. This is totally unlike the dog we adopted out who was outgoing and friendly with everyone. At this point he would be a project for anyone interested in him. Meanwhile I will continue to work on socializing him with new people.

If you are interested in adopting Panzer please go to our website, copy, paste and complete our adoption application and email it to gsdrescuectx@yahoo.com.

How To Choose Healthy Foods For Your Pet

From www.pethealing.net By Ingrid King

The overwhelming array of choices when it comes to pet food makes it difficult to determine which foods are best for your pet. In addition, many pet owners stopped trusting commercial pet foods after the massive pet food recall of 2007. Pet owners began preparing home-made diets for their pets or jumped on the raw food bandwagon. How do you know what food is best for your pet?

I am not a proponent of raw food diets. While I acknowledge that there are numerous benefits to feeding raw, unprocessed foods, I believe that the risks for animals outweigh the benefits. Unless you can be one hundred percent sure that the meat you're feeding your pet is pathogen and parasite free, you should not be feeding raw meat. If you want to feed a homemade diet, feed your pet a cooked diet and make sure it is properly balanced. Petdiets.com provides recipes created by veterinary nutritionists for healthy pets as well as pets with special medical or dietary needs.

Most pet owners still prefer to feed a commercial diet, but they want to feed something that's "natural" and free of preservatives. But how do you know whether the food that's advertised as "natural" really is? Often, foods are labeled "natural", but once you check the label, you find that the food really isn't so natural after all. A look at the ingredients might show that the conventional brand's "natural" food is still of pretty poor quality. Maybe the primary ingredient was changed from poultry by-products to chicken, but the food still contains corn gluten meal, soy meal, and wheat gluten meal, ingredients that are high on the list of culprits when it comes to allergies or digestive problems. This is why it's important to not fall for the marketing hype of a "natural" label but read the ingredients.

Another common misconception is that veterinary diets are high quality, healthy foods because they come from a vet's office. Unfortunately, when you look at the ingredient list on the veterinary brands, you often find the same things you find in the cheap grocery store brands. Most veterinarians receive very little training in nutrition. Veterinary schools typically offer only a few weeks of training in nutrition, and the instruction is often sponsored or provided by the same companies that make these veterinary diets.

Many pet owners are unsure of what makes a food natural, healthy or holistic. The best way to determine this is to disregard tags such as "all-natural", "holistic", "veterinarian approved", "chosen by top breeders". Ignore the cute photos of happy dogs and cute kittens and wholesome looking ingredients on the labels, and look at the ingredient listing instead. Manufacturers are required to list ingredients in descending order, i.e., the ingredient with the highest amount is listed first, the one with the smallest amount last.

Quality Ingredients to Look For:
Animal proteins - identified by name (e.g., chicken, beef, lamb).

Organic ingredients - meats, vegetables, grains and fruits - these are certified free of pesticides, hormones, and antibiotics. Check for the USDA Organic seal on the package.

Whole unrefined grains like barley, brown rice, or ground oatmeal for dogs. For cats, it is best to look for grain-free foods. Most cats can't digest grains, and grain-free foods also help alleviate or eliminate hairballs.

Human-Grade ingredients - human grade meats tend to be better quality.

Whole vegetables and fruits - the less processed the better (for example, whole potatoes are much better than potato starch). These are important sources of natural plant-based nutrients (phyto-nutrients) and antioxidants.

Bridget Found A Home

From Bridget's foster: (this is her mug shot)>
We've named her Bridget and I think she's sort of learning it. She was pretty nervous the first night but didn't make a sound in her kennel. She still pees herself if we make too quick a movement to pet her or pick her up but hasn't had any accidents in the house other than that.

She and Niko are getting along perfectly as well. They spent a good hour wrestling and playing tug of war with a rope toy last night and he lets her drink from his water bowl so they're good. She's really smart too! She's learned "outside" and "kennel" in just two days, which I think is just amazing. So all in all, she's good. I think tomorrow is going to be the big test because we're having the roof re-done so it'll be pretty noisy but both James and I will be home all day so hopefully it won't scare her too much.

Myra is now back with our rescue group and seeking her forever home. Myra is around 4 yrs old, house trained, crate trained, and has the most amazing eyes!

Myra has amazing ball drive. She will flip a tennis ball into the air and catch it. Myra loves to play fetch and will bring the ball back to you. Geeta is one of Calypso's puppies. She is pictured here in her new foster home living the good life. Please check back for more information as we get to know her.
Geeta is the largest of the German Shepherd mix pups, female, approximately 4 months old, spayed, and micro chipped. Geeta is HW negative & up-to-date on all age appropriate vaccinations. She is quite shy, but when cornered she just hide her head, no aggression, just very scared and unsocialized. She had symptoms of a URI just like her siblings at the shelter.

Reveille - R.I.P.

It is with great sadness to report that poor Reveille has been sent to the Rainbow Bridge. He was diagnosed with distemper and put to rest. Here's looking at you Reveille > >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Separate Lifetimes

We who choose to surround ourselveswith lives even more temporary than our own, live within a fragile circle; easily and often breached. Unable to accept its awful gaps, we would still live no other way. We cherish memory as the only certain immortality, never fully understanding the necessary plan.
--- Irving Townsend ---

Reveille is one of Calypso's puppies. He is very shy right now and will get a lot of socializing and confidence building in his foster home. He is up to date on his vaccinations, altered, and microchipped.

Meet Calypso & Her Offspring

Meet Calypso aka Calli, pictured in her shelter mug shot. She is a purebred German Shepherd dog, female. Callie has had one litter of pups that we know of.

This sweet beauty came to our group with her puppies. Calli was covered in ticks, malnourished, and surviving in a junk yard with her babies when she was resuced. She is so greatful and appreciative of any comfort that she gets. Calli was very insecure about coming inside the house and it was clear that she did not know how to walk on the floors having spent her entire life outside. Calli now enjoys coming inside, the comfort of her own crate, and her fluffy quilt that she sleeps on. She takes treats from her foster mom very gently and is learning to walk on a leash.

Calli is approximately 2-3 years of age, heartworm positive, and will be treated once she gains some weight. She lays on a dog bed and acts like she is afraid to do anything that might get her in trouble. At first she was showing her teeth to dogs who approached her and seemed defensive, but is getting more relaxed every day and now just looks at the other dogs showing no sign of aggression to them. We think she has great potential to be rehabilitated into a wonderful companion. You can see the joy in her in just having a safe comfortable place to lie down. She is now spayed, current on shots, and microchipped. Calli needs some time to build up her confidence and get her use to living the good life.

Here she is at her foster's home. She's
already looking more relaxed and happy!
