Redford - Baby Steps To Healing

Take a look at how our boy Redford is slowly getting better.

Day 1 of Rescue

Day 1 of Rescue

End of Week 1

In the past week Red has definitely improved. He's perked up and become more energetic and playful. He's still learning about toys, but has become more interested after watching the other dogs play. His eyes are brighter and his fur is growing back slowly.

He went to the vet last week and received his shots and they clipped his nails to a more reasonable length. He's had a bath pretty much every other day to help keep him from getting stinky - he had a fungal infection that he is still on medication for. His skin is also becoming softer and less flaky, due in part to giving him a daily dose of fish oil.

Red loves to hang out in the living room. He smiles when he gets to hang out with everyone. He's such a happy, trusting dog for everything that he's been through. He loves exploring the yard with me, and will come when he's called. He comes lolloping everytime. He's still a bit awkward since he's still skinny with great big paws and a great big head. He's like a puppy - he still has to grow into his body. Although Red's been improving he's not out of the woods yet.

He's started taking steroids to help with the inflammation of his skin and to help ease his cough. He'll still need plenty of time to recover from his mange and significant hair loss before he'll be able to be neutered and have heartworm treatment, but he's finally got a place where he is safe and warm and can really start to recover.

Since he's still learning about toys, he's also learning about sharing with the other dogs. Sometimes he just wants all the toys to himself. He responds immediately to verbal corrections, and always looks at me with sorry eyes when he knows he's done something naughty. He just wants to please. He still loves his treats and goes through a box about every 2-3 days. He has a healthy appetite and is slowly but surely putting on more weight. Red absolutely loves attention and definitely wants to be a lap dog - he tries to snuggle up all the time!

Volunteers & Foster Homes Needed

Redford is one of German Shepherd Rescue of Central Texas' newest rescues. He is an absolutely wonderful dog and I could not be more happy that he is safe. I cannot say anything bad about this dog. He is simply amazing.
He was an owner surrender, and he is in horrible shape physically. He been treated for sarcoptic mange, and a fungal infection and he is very emaciated.
Red knows his name already [he's only been with me for two nights]. He knows commands like "sit" "give paw" and he comes when he's called. He eats all his food and takes his medication without any fuss. He loves treats of any kind, and he gets so excited for them, but he is always gentle when taking a treat from your fingers. He hangs out in his crate and doesn't make any fuss or give me any trouble - he only barks/whines when he needs to go outside to potty. When he does go outside, he goes straight to do his business and then wants to come right back inside. He isn't pushy or overbearing at all.
He is happy to go along with anything. He rides in the car without a problem - needs a little boost into the car because he is so weak, but that will be changed. Red walks so nicely on a leash, no pulling at all, and if you change direction all you have to do is call his name to get his attention and then he comes to you! He is so funny, he loves playing games with people. He's been through so much, but doesn't act sorry for himself. He's always happy and ready to go. He loves to be near people and will surely turn into a velcro dog. He has had no accidents at all in the house and sleeps through the night without a peep.
Red is so sweet, it breaks my heart that someone could neglect him so much. But he is safe now and getting the much needed treatments, food and love that he needs. He's going to be a big boy when he fills out, definitely a Gentle Giant type.

We are looking for a long-term foster to give him the extra special attention that he needs to make a successful recovery. The vet asks that he have a foster home where he is kept inside day and night because he is so skinny and has barely any fur, so he needs to be kept in a warm home. We need someone that can give this boy the time and attention he needs to get better. If you, or someone you know, are willing and able to commit to foster him for the long run, please let us know. He deserves the best.

Here is some information about Red.
