Many Moons Ago-There Was A Pup Who's Name Is Dolly

From the rescue's director: I know that a lot of you weren't with me when Dolly was adopted as a pup over 6 years ago, but it is so good to hear about her I had to share and her pictures with the chickens are priceless. Makes a sunny spot in my day to get this email. Dolly was (and is) as her name says a doll. GSD/Chow mixes are often the sweetest dogs I have known.

From Dolly's Adopter: Hello. I am not sure if you remember me but I adopted a dog from you awhile back- Dolly.. A german shepard/chow mix.

I just wanted to let you know that she is doing great still out here in Johnson City on her mini ranch. She has been a wonderful dog and mommy to my Daughter and her chickens. She loves to swim in the river and the vet said at her recent yearly check up that she is the healthiest 6 yr old he has ever seen. So I am writing because I wanted to thank you again for letting us adopt Dolly from you, as she has proven to be a wonderful dog, well socialized with other dogs and children... and I know I can attribute that to your efforts for the time you had her with you when she was a puppy.

Attached is two pictures of Dolly now with her new litter of chickens from this season. She loves the chickens so much she lets them ride around on her back as she walks around the yard. My older dog died and we have recently added a new Vizsla puppy member, which she has taken under her wing as well. She is a great mommy.

"Dogs' lives are short, too short, but you know that going in. You know the pain is coming, you're going to love a dog, and there's going to be a great anguish, so you live fully in the moment with her, never fail to share her joy or delight in her innocence, because you can't support the illusion that a dog can be your lifelong companion.

There's such beauty in the hard honesty of that, in accepting and giving love while always aware it comes with an unbearable price. Maybe loving dogs is a way we do penance for all the other illusions we allow ourselves and for the mistakes we make because of those illusions." -Dean Koontz

Raina (Celeste) Hit The Doggie Lottery

Raina is doing really well now. After a little trouble getting her to eat we found the right food and now she has put on a couple of pounds...she has about 10 more to go, but I think we have the right combo now.

We picked the right name for her (Raina meaning "wise guardian" in German and "queen" in Spanish) she loves laying in my spot on the lovesat and moans when she sprawls out. She knows that's the only furniture (besides our bed) that she's allowed on and sprawls out on it when I'm not home.
She's funny when I leave for work because she wraps her paws around my ankles and Rick says it looks like she's saying,"mommy don't go". Raina spends her day working with Rick in the yard, chasing the squirrels, and removing all the toys from her toy basket, which she loves the squeaky ones.
She loves to play catch with herself with the talking ball and the squeaky ball...we tried to get a picture of it, but we weren't quick enough because we're laughing too hard. She loves her yard, which she enjoys patrolling and waiting for the horses to walk by so she can run the fence line. She's curious about the pool, but has not attempted to get in yet, she just likes drinking from it for now. We think she's settling in now and knows this is her forever home. We tried to get a picture of her laying on her bed on the chaise lounge by the pool, but the squirrels were tormenting her so she would not lay still.

Dog Day Afternoon & Raina (formerly Celeste)

Recently German Shepherd Rescue spent the afternoon at this event (sponsored by KLBJ). We caught up with adopters & their dogs! Here's an update from Raina's folks!
Happy 3rd week anniversary Raina (formerly Celeste)! We renamed her Raina (meaning “wise guardian” in German and “queen” in Spanish), which fits her to a T! She is doing really well and has gained 3 lbs! She loves to patrol her yard and enjoys running the fence line especially when the neighbors come by with their horses. She also enjoys trying to snag a squirrel or two!
She has bonded closely with Rick, but knows Robin is her mommy. Each morning she either blocks Robin from leaving to go to work or wraps her paws around Robin’s ankle, which looks like she’s saying “mommy don’t go”. She enjoys Sunday brunches because she gets her special treats and keeps us entertained by throwing her squeaky balls around and catching them. She is just too cute! She’s curious about the pool, but it’s just a bit too chilly for her to get in yet.

She seems to realize she’s now in her forever home and we are now working on her doggie manners. She’s a quick study, so we don’t expect this to take very long. Raina is such a character to watch…she really is all personality and our little angel!

Tiara - Pretty As A Princess

Tiara is brand new to our group along with her sister Bling. They are both adorable puppies and it is likley they are purebred German shepherds.

She is spayed, micro-chipped, and UTD on her vaccinations.
Tiara is a sweet girl with lots of personality. She likes to be held and loves to explore outside. She is learning quickly to share food and toys as she had little opportunity in the harsh conditions she was rescued from. She is soft and cuddly and sleeps in her crate through the night without trouble. She is a smart girl who can learn quickly.

She wags her tail and loves attention and likes to follow you around. She is an active playful puppy who needs a family to call her own.

Louise Has Love To Give!

Louise is a little girl very well housetrained and good in the house. She is crate trained but dosen't need a crate. She is an excellent watch dog and will let you know someone is there, but if they come in she just wants to be petted and loved on. She loves walks, chasing balls and any attention and training she can get. She gets along with most dogs, and seems to really like the pups to play with, but can be a bit pushy with some dogs, but she is easily redirected. Louise will come and pet you with her paw gently when she wants attention. Louise is smart and loving and will make an excellent companion for someone who wants a smaller dog.

Please Consider Thelma!

This girl is an over looked treasure. She is excellent in the house, doesn't bother anything and will hold her pee and poop for incredible long periods of time. She has no accidents in the house. She is very protective of her yard, but once folks are in she understands they are OK and will either back away or come up to be petted. She is a very gentle lady who doesn't want any trouble with anyone. Thelma is quiet only barks when someone is coming in the yard she doesn't know. She is easy to live with and doesn't force herself on her human, but will come sit in front of you and gently put her paw on your leg when she wants to be petted. If you ignore her she will walk away and lay down. You could not find a more loving gentle companion than Miss Thelma.

We're Hearing From Our New Adopters!

Kiba is one of Lady's pups. He was adopted before we had even given him a name. His name is now Kiba!
Thank you so much for working with us to adopt our puppy, Kiba. He is doing very well so far and we are so happy to have him in our home. He is such a smart puppy and is learning so fast. He is coming along with house-training (he still has some way to go), and has learned several commands. He has been doing "Sit" since Friday and "Lie Down" very well since yesterday. He is also doing very well on the leash so far. We are very proud of him and the success and intelligence that he has demonstrated thus far.

He will have his first vet visit tomorrow afternoon. We have written a list of all the questions we have for the vet, as we are new puppy parents and want to be sure he as healthy as possible. We hope he will do well, but so far he is very friendly with strangers so I don't think we have anything to worry about.

We also took him on his first shopping experience at Petco. We showed him many toys, but he only seemed mildly interested. A few minutes later, he pulled a toy from the rack himself and was so excited that we just had to buy it (especially since at that point, he had already started playing with it and got his puppy slobber on it). He wanted to carry it around the store by himself he was so excited. He loves his new toy along with the green and white stuffed toy that he got from you.

We also found a great park close to our apartment where we can take him to explore. He loves finding sticks, but does not quite get the concept of fetch yet. He also loves lying on the grass (and sometimes eating the grass, as you know). We also found a nice close walking trail with a small stream. He was quite sure about getting his paws in the water at first, but he is brave and crossed the second time with no trouble.
We cannot thank you all enough for your help and will be sure to send pictures as he gets grows.

Cyrus Just Wants Somebody To Love!

Cyrus is an 8 month old purebred German Shepherd. He is brand new to our group so we are still getting to know him. Cyrus came from an extremely abusive life, but you wouldn't know it! He's happy to be with people who are happy he's with them! Please check back for updates.

Brees ~ As In Breeze

This is Brees' original bio:
Brees is a purebred German shepherd, spayed female, approximately 2 yrs old, up-to-date on shots, micro chipped, but needs heartworm treatment. She is underweight due to neglect from previous owner who is currently serving jail time for cruelty to animals.

Here is her update:
This girl has come such a long ways in her training and social skills. She is now playing with the other dogs and doing fine with everyone except one older female and those two are ok under supervision, just a personality conflict. She plays with the pups and they love following her around like a big sister.
Brees loves to chase a ball and bring it back to you. She will catch a treat or ball or toy tossed to her and loves the attention of training. She is crate trained and doing better on her housetraining. She knows sit and wait and walks ok on a leash.
She will soon get her heartworm treatment and once that is done she will be ready to go to her new life with a family that will love her and give her the training, love and attention she needs. She is an excellent watch dog and will alert and look tough, but once in the yard and she sees a new person is ok with her folks she is very sweet and friendly. Brees will make an excellent companion for the right person/family.

If you are interested in adopting Brees, please go to our website, copy, paste and complete our adoption application. Email the application to gsdrescuectx@yahoo.com.
