Sukoshi (now Jackson) Update From His New Adopters!

My name was Sukoshi when I was with Miss Beverly at her foster home, but my new mom and dad couldn't ever remember it so they tried lots of funny names until "Jackson" seemed to fit me.  Now they call me "Jack," "the Jacksters," "Jack boy," and sometimes they call me "wild child" - I don't know what that means but they usually laugh when they call me that.

My mom is going to send some pictures today or tomorrow.  She has been taking lots of photos but it takes her awhile to get them into the computer.

I love my big sister who is a Golden Retriever rescue named Jessie.  We play and nap together (but mom says she needs to loose some weight so she can play with me more).  We are going to start her on a walking routine!!!

I love me little brother who is a Chihuahua mix, but he is a little grouchy sometimes.  Mom says it is because he was a Katrina survivor, was adopted by a mean family before she rescued him.   He is about 10 years old and doesn't always feel good sometimes.  I understand and just give him a big lick/kisses to make him all better.  He has a cubby where he likes to sleep and he sometimes steals my squeaky toys but that is ok too because when he is finished and leaves his cubby, I go get them.

I love my new front and back yard which has a very high fence and I could never jump it.  I am experiencing lots of new stuff everyday and I am very happy - my mom says I smile a lot.  The neighbors have these strange things called chickens, turkeys and donkeys. I love to run to the fence and watch them.  I also love to chase the squirrels - my mom says I am a good boy because the squirrels eat too much of her birdseed.  Not too sure what I would do with a squirrel if I caught it.  There are all kinds of fun smells and adventures here.

Thank you for rescuing me from the shelter and taking good care of me!!!!!!  You are the greatest!!!!!  Now I can live a long and happy life!!!!!

Love,

Jackson Wood

Merry Is Doing Great. Adopted in 2012

Just wanted to give you an update on Merry.  She has been a great companion since we adopted her last year.
Attached are a couple pictures of her.

Thanks s million for letting her become a part of our family !!

Katie Is Doing Great In Her New Home

From her adopters:

Katie is doing great, you did a great job as a foster mom :-) She is so sweet & fun-loving. She's made herself at home already and we just back to Laredo less than 24 hours ago. She's eating well, drinking tons of water, and playing with Maja.

The 2 dogs are getting along well we just have to keep an eye on Maja to make sure she doesn't play too rough but Katie can definitely hold her own. She loves to steal Maja's toys, bones, and treats right out from under Maja's nose then she takes it and hides it. It's so funny, it almost seems like it's her sneaky way of getting back at Maja.

She's bonding quickly with Miska and myself, she follows us around the house, loves to sit on our laps and give kisses. She was so exhausted from playing with Maja yesterday she went to the bedroom without being told and fell asleep on her dog bed. When we woke up at 5:00 this morning her and Maja were curled up in our bed together, naughty pups :-)!

She's doing well with "sit", "lay down", and "stay". One thing I've noticed that I wanted to ask you about is her whining. She seems perfectly happy but sometimes whines gently while walking around the house. Like I said, she doesn't seem to be in any distress, and once I say "it's ok Katie" she stops.

Katie is happy and healthy thanks to you and we are absolutely in love with her.

From Dirk's Adopter We Hear...

Dirk on left
"Dirk is doing just great and he finished his Canine Good Citizen Program this past December.  We couldn’t imagine our family without him!

Pearl's (Kimber) New Home With Sarge-Happy Tails

From adopters: "We got Pearl 3 weeks ago. She is our 2nd adopted dog from you. Pearl is now Kimber, and she likes her name. She is really still a big puppy (even has the smell of a puppy at time; how delicious) and is looking for the right things to play with. She now knows that the comforter, even if it smells like cat, is not for chewing. Daddy's underwear gets put in the hamper as soon as she brings it out into the living room, mommy's shoes are all in the closet now, and there is no more food on the counter (our last sausage grill was people 4 sausages, Kimber 6, followed by a bout of tummy ache).

Kimber has met the cat and the neighbors, and is curious but polite with all of them. One of our neighbors even commented how much happier Sarge looks now that he has a sister. They play with gusto, jumping, chasing, gnawing. Kimber is always the second through the door, so I think Sarge is in charge, but at times she gets a hold of his collar and just drags him a few feet, and he lets her.

Her favorite game by far is playing tug-o-war with her brother. After that she loves to snuggle with mom or dad. She shows when she wants to go out (sitting in front of the door) and, she knows how to let us know when it is time to go (now!) by putting her nose on the door knob.

There is so much more, I could go on and on. She is so beautiful inside and out and we love her with all our hearts, as she does us, judging by how closely she snuggles on the couch or in bed."

Update From India's Adopters

"India, will be 3 years old next month.  She's doing great and really likes the change. Especially since the new house has lots of windows. Which means that even when she's in the yard, she can keep an eye on us!  We did some more training with her and she's much better on the leash (she had some leash aggression when she approached other dogs. She still does it once it a while but only when a dog is very close and challenges her. Mostly she has mellowed out a great deal through positive reinforcement training). She also has become a water dog! As you probably remember, she loved her frisbee. Well, we started taking her to the lake (about a mile from our house) and as soon as it got hot, she began chasing the frisbee right into the water! I've attached some pictures so you can see her when she's at her happiest. I think swimming after the frisbee is now her favorite activity.

When we picked her up from you, she had injured her front leg.  Well, she kept re-injuring it and so we took her to the vet and learned that she has degenerative joint disease in both elbows.  The doctor didn't recommend surgery as he felt it was a risky surgery. He also felt that if we got her weight down (she's at 69 pounds, slightly less than when we got her from you almost two years ago) she would likely be fine.  If she has pain (and this sometimes happens if she hurts herself playing--but only every couple of months or so), we give her anti-inflammatories, as per the vet's suggestion.  The swimming really helps so we try to take her as often as possible. Otherwise, she really is thriving and happy and probably a little spoiled from me being home all day with her!  But she's still the good girl you remember. Real sweet and loving and so great around the house-- our guests are always impressed by her manners (especially when we are dining! She never begs. Only finds a nice spot a distance away to relax while we eat).
Just wanted to let you know that all is well with India and to thank you again for placing her with us. We adore her! Enjoy the attached pictures."

Stella's Adoption Update

We talked to Stella's adopter and she says she is wonderful, smart and such a fun good girl. Her only issue is when she first meets other dogs and they are working on that, taking her for walks everyday and correcting the behavior and she seems to be getting better each walk. They are amazed at how good she is in their home, sleeps thru the night and goes right to bed with no fuss.

Rosie Update

Rosie has officially settled in to my home! She is such a sweet girl and so smart! Her health continues to improve and she is gaining weight. She loves her early morning runs, and she is very protective!

Courtesy Posting-German Shepherd Dog

We have been working closely with Jane and Shari Elkins from the The Canine Center for Training and Behavior to help her overcome her fearful reactivity toward dogs. It's only toward dogs. She loves people and cats. We will continue to work closely with The Canine Center and do everything we can until the day she is adopted.

PROVIDING FOR YOUR LOVED ONES WHO ARE PETS

by Thomas J. O’Meara, JD

Let’s start with the sad or bad news for all those who love their pets and consider them family members. The Texas courts still consider family pets to be property. The good news is, in Texas, you can provide for your cherished pets who may outlive you. If you have a pet whose comfort and care you want to make certain continues in the event something happens to you due to death or disability, the following questions are a starting point.

1. If you become unable to care for your pet, who will be your pet’s caregiver?

This is the obvious first question. Choosing a caregiver for your pet is an all important decision. The duties that may be a daily joy for you would not necessarily be a delight for your designated caregiver. Long before anything unexpected happens to you, have a serious discussion with those persons you believe would have both genuine interest in your pet and a true ability to provide for them.

2. Where would my pet be happiest?

Some pet owners give a lot of time and thought to designating a suitable care giver but don’t consider the circumstances of home life for the pet. Think carefully about the lifestyle of any proposed caregiver and the probability that they may change residence, have new adults or children or pets in their home that would not be a good fit for your pet.

3. Can you afford to pay the caregiver a reasonable amount to care for your pet, so the same level of quality care you have provided will continue?

Many of us have no idea how much we spend on our pets. Quality veterinary care, pet medicines, exotic food and toys, all add up to amounts that might surprise you. Determine the average life expectancy of your pet, if well cared for. Multiply that number of years by the estimated sum
you spend on your pet each year. That amount is what should be set aside to assure proper care for your pet, even if your proposed caregiver appears to be prosperous.

4. For the funds you set aside for your pet, choose a trustee that is not the same person as the proposed caregiver.

With a pet whose life expectancy is long, the formula described in Paragraph 2 above can represent a substantial amount of money. No matter how wonderful you think your proposed pet caregiver is, he or she may find unsupervised access to a large sum of money to be a sore temptation. Give serious thought to contacting a fiduciary such as a trust officer of a bank, a trust company, your family CPA or your probate and estate attorney, and ask what they would charge to provide trustee services to maintain and invest the funds, account for the funds and reimburse the caregiver for funds expended. By designating two independent parties, one a caregiver and another a trustee, you will better protect the valuable assets you set aside for a pet whose life expectancy is long. You also will find out in a hurry if the designated caregiver who understands your proposed plan has an interest in your pet...or your money.

Another possibility is the purchase of an annuity or similar insuring agreement with a specified pay out. With this device while there is not the same level of assurance that the caregiver will not redirect funds to his own purposes, at least the amount of money to which the caregiver has access at any given time is less.

5. Do you have a written agreement that is enforceable in the event of your disability or death?

Disability can be as much of a challenge as death. If you don’t have an enforceable written agreement that addresses both circumstances, you have not done what is required to make certain your pet will be cared for in the event of your inability. There are a variety of ways you can accomplish this while you are alive including both written contracts and trusts. Wills and other testamentary devises typically cannot operate until the time of death so remember that disability must be addressed separately.

While these may not seem like happy issues to tackle, you may be pleasantly surprised to discover how much better you feel after you have answered these questions and made an arrangement that meets your needs and your pet’s.
